This curriculum includes the opportunity for distance learning, online learning, experiential learning (internships), IEP programs, AP coursework, and vocational certifications. A standard diploma in the State of Virginia requires:
- 4 years of high school English
- 3 laboratory sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science)
- 3 Virginia & US History courses
- 2 years of PE
- 2 years of Foreign Language, Art, or Technical Education
- 1 year of Personal Economics
- 4 electives
Bayside High School is home to Virginia Beach’s only Health Sciences Academy. Students in the HSA pursue an Advanced Studies Diploma with extra emphasis to prepare them for a career in medicine, nursing, physical therapy or athletic training:
Health Sciences Academy students receive a solid foundation in the core subjects as they pursue an Advanced Studies Diploma. All Students in the Health Sciences Academy take Health Occupations, Human Anatomy, Physiology & Pathophysiology I, and Physiology & Pathophysiology II. In addition, all HSA students are required to take a core science course and a math course each year.
Students take at least 18 AP classes (which can be taken for college credit), and must also complete 75 hours of health-related community service.
