Cape Henry, Neighborhoods in Virginia Beach

Here’s my neighborhood guide for Cape Henry in Virginia Beach.

Cape Henry, Virginia BeachCape Henry, Virginia Beach

Location

Cape Henry is an area on Shore Drive close to the intersection with Great Neck Road.  It is near the Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia Beach.

Community

Cape Henry was the site of the First Landing by English settlers in the New World in 1607.  It was named for Prince Henry, the eldest son of the then King of England, James I.  The colonists camped out on the beach for a few days before traveling upriver to modern-day Jamestown.

Later, Cape Henry was home to America’s first lighthouse.  But nowadays, Cape Henry is a beachside haven that tourists usually ignore.

Area residents are often spotted riding bikes or wandering down the beach in their flip-flops.  With First Landing State Park nearby and the Chesapeake Bay looming to the north, favorite area activities include hiking, fishing, boating, kayaking, sailing, or surfing.  Cape Henry is also close to lots of favorite local restaurants, like Chick’s, Froggie’s, Hot Tuna and Bay Local.

The Chesapeake Beach area is peacefully tucked away from the rest of Virginia Beach, but offers big city conveniences.  The beach is never more than ten minutes away.  Hungry, but don’t want to get in your car?  Hop in your boat instead and tie up at the dock at restaurants like Chick’s, Dockside, or Bubba’s.  Go for a round of golf at the Eagle Haven Golf Course.

Shore Drive has some of the best night life in Virginia Beach, as well as quick access to bike paths, hiking trails, or camping at First Landing State Park.  The Bayside Recreation Center and Great Neck Rec centers are nearby, with fantastic gyms for less than $100 per year.

Interstate 64 is accessible via Northampton Blvd, or you can access I-264 off of London Bridge Rd. JEB Little Creek is fifteen minutes away, Fort Story is 5 minutes away, and NAS Oceana, Norfolk NOB, and Dam Neck Annex are all within a half hour drive.

Shopping

There are lots of shopping opportunities along Shore Drive, or in the Independence Blvd-Haygood corridor.  Still not satisfied?  You’re within twenty minutes of Hilltop Shopping Center, or the Pembroke, Lynnhaven, and MacArthur Malls.

Schools

John B. Dey Elementary School, Great Neck Middle School, and Cox High School. Nearby local private schools include Cape Henry Collegiate.
