Here’s my community guide for Croatan in Virginia Beach.

CroatanCroatan Beach, Virginia Beach

Location

Croatan is a beautiful beach neighborhood in Virginia Beach, just south of the resort strip and Oceanfront.  It faces the Atlantic Ocean, in between the Rudee Inlet and Dam Neck Annex.  Croatan Road is the only entrance or exit to the neighborhood.  There are several small lakes in Croatan named Lake Wesley and Lake Christine.

The Croatan Community

Most homes are contemporary beach homes with sparkling views of the ocean.  You might even see stilts here and there.  Even though Croatan is technically a public beach, it usually feels very private and secluded.  Many of the residents own boats.  Others are frequently spotted on their bikes, heading for the Oceanfront.

Many of the beach homes here are second homes for people who usually live in Richmond or Washington DC.

The East Coast Surfing Championships are held nearby every year.

Homes for Sale

Prices range from two level homes for $579,000 all the way to waterfront palaces selling for $6,450,000.  There are many waterfront homes facing the Atlantic Ocean, Rudee Inlet, or the various lakes.

Neighboring Communities

Croatan is near Shadowlawn, Rudee Heights, Beach Borough, the North End, and the homes of the Virginia Beach resort.

Convenience

Croatan is convenient to the Dam Neck Annex, NAS Oceana, Camp Pendleton, and Fort Story.  It is an easy drive to JEB Little Creek.  It is close to I-264, Virginia Beach Boulevard, Pacific and Atlantic Avenues, and Laskin Road.

In Croatan, you can enjoy the best that the Oceanfront has to offer: free concertsfireworks, surfing, fishing, indoor skydiving, mini golf, and more.  Spend an elegant evening at the Princess Anne Country Club.

The Virginia Beach Oceanfront hosts many local festivals, including the Boardwalk Art Showthe Neptune Festival, the American Music Festival, numerous wine and beer festivals, the Patriotic Festival, and others.

There’s also lots nearby to keep you busy at Croatan Beach.  You can catch a show at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, or see the komodo dragons  at  the Virginia Aquarium and the Marine Science Center Local restaurants include Terrapin (specializing in locally grown and sourced food), Waterman’s, and Isle of Capri (with ocean view dining).

Kid-friendly activities include Ocean Breeze Water Park, Motor World, or of course, the beach.

Shopping

There is lots of boutique shopping, especially around Laskin Road.  A little further afield, Hilltop Shopping Center has excellent options for clothing, entertainment, or organic groceries.
