Neighborhoods in Virginia Beach, Thoroughgood, Virginia Beach

Here’s my neighborhood guide for Thoroughgood in Virginia Beach.

Thoroughgood, Virginia Beach

Thoroughgood is a large waterfront neighborhood in northwestern Virginia Beach.  On a map, it looks like a giant wedge bounded by Independence Boulevard, Pleasure House Road and the Lynnhaven River.

Prices & Homes for Sale

Prices start in the mid $300,000’s for a 1960’s brick ranch and extend up to $2,000,000 for waterfront homes.

People have lived in the Thoroughgood area for hundreds of years.  Adam Thoroughgood was one of the area’s earliest residents.  He came to Virginia in the early 1600’s as an indentured servant. He was later granted 5,360 acres of what is now Thoroughgood in Virginia Beach.  This land grant eventually became the neighborhoods of Thoroughgood, Lake Smith, Baylake Pines, Ocean Park, and Church Point.

Modern-day Thoroughgood was first established in the 1960s with a collection of brick ranch homes on wide treed lots.  In the 1970s, more homes were added.  Construction ceased until 2005, when yet another group of homes was built along Wakefield Drive.

Today, the community is a mix of stately ranches, two-story homes, and trilevels.  Many homes have views of the Lynnhaven River, Lake Charles or Thoroughgood Cove.  With its many trees, and a great location near beaches and bases, Thoroughgood remains a popular place to live.  Area residents are often spotted riding bikes or strolling down the wide streets. Families walk to school together.

(By the way, Adam Thoroughgood’s original house still stands, and is operated by the city of Virginia Beach as a living museum.  The Thoroughgood neighborhood was built around it.)

Neighboring Communities

Baylake Beach and Baylake Pines,  Chick's Beach, Church Point, Lake Smith and Lake Smith Terrace, Lakeview Shores, Ocean Park, Witchduck Point

Thoroughgood is tucked away from the rest of Virginia Beach, but offers big city conveniences.  The beach is ten minutes away.  JEB Little Creek’s main gate is five minutes up the road.  Fort Story is 15 minutes away, and NAS Oceana, Norfolk NOB, and Dam Neck Annex are all within a half hour drive.

Shore Drive is around the corner – Shore Drive has some of the best night life in Virginia Beach, as well as quick access to bike paths, hiking trails, or camping at First Landing State Park or the park at Bayville Farms.  The Bayside Recreation Center is nearby with a fantastic gym for less than $100 per year.

Interstate 64 is ten minutes away off of Northampton Blvd, or you can access I-264 via Independence Blvd.  The Norfolk Airport is closeby.

There are lots of shopping opportunities along Shore Drive, or in the Independence Blvd-Haygood corridor.  Still not satisfied?  You’re within fifteen minutes of Pembroke Mall, and twenty minutes from Lynnhaven, MacArthur, and Hilltop Shopping Centers.

Hermitage  or Thoroughgood Elementary, Independence Middle School, and Princess Anne High School. Nearby local private schools include Cape Henry Collegiate and Norfolk Academy.  Thoroughgood Elementary is an excellent Virginia Beach school and is within walking distance of most homes in the neighborhood.

2016 is predicted to be a big year for real estate in Virginia Beach – don’t miss out!
